Do You Think This Kind Of Action Could Also Work If Used To Stop Terrorists Or The People Who Support Them?

DA Will Investigate Ranches That Killed Chickens With Chippers

LOS ANGELES -- After receiving calls, letters and E-mails from across the country, San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has decided to continue investigating two poultry ranches where workers dumped thousands of live chickens into wood chippers.

After investigators conduct additional interviews, Dumanis will decide whether to reverse an earlier decision not to prosecute ranch owners Arie and Bill Wilgenburg for animal cruelty.

Last week, the DA's Office announced that the Wilgenburgs, owners of the Escondido-based Ward Poultry Farm, were not acting with criminal intent when they used wood chippers to destroy old unproductive hens at their ranches in February.

The Wilgenburgs said they were following the advice of a veterinarian.

Wayne Pacelle is a senior vice president with The Humane Society of the United States, which sent a letter to the DA earlier this week. He calls the practice grotesque, and said, "there's a reason the movie 'Fargo' is unforgettable."

The film includes a scene of a killer pushing a victim's body into a wood chipper.

Grebner has one word for animal activists: ‘Fanatics’

By DANIEL STURM

Apparently, Ingham County Commissioner Mark Grebner doesn’t have a lot of patience for activists who are trying to make the county stop selling animals from the shelter for research: “They are a “bunch of fanatics,” Grebner declared.

Mark Grebner

“They’re similar to the right-to-life extremists who occasionally assassinate a doctor who conducts abortions,” he said in an interview.

Grebner said that the campaign, led by an organization called the Friends of the Ingham County Animal Shelter, has made elected officials waste time and energy and added that commissioners are now receiving mail from Detroit, Alaska and Brazil.

“Those are not my constituents,” said Grebner.

He said e-mails to the county from activists a few months ago were so voluminous that they crashed the computer system.

Could Grebner be getting carried away?

Possibly. The chief of the county’s management information systems says he doesn’t recall any lobbying effort that shut down e-mail communication.

Grebner may be confused, too. At least he appeared to be in his attempt to link FICAS with an organization that he said was linked to a fire at MSU.

“Most of the stuff that FICAS does is under one umbrella with PETA” – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. “PETA was linked to the MSU Agricultural Hall fire bombing. They haven’t fire bombed me yet, and I’m not going to be threatened by these people.”

Grebner was apparently confusing two incidents. Earth Liberation Front took responsibility for the 1999 Agricultural Hall fire. In 1992, a radical group called the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) took responsibility for freeing laboratory animals and setting a fire at Anthony Hall. In this second case, PETA issued a press release on ALF’s behalf, describing the alleged terrible conditions in which animals were kept.

Responding to Grebner’s accusations, Linda Fausey, the attorney for FICAS, said the volunteer organization was not involved in criminal acts on the MSU campus. “It’s getting slanderous. It’s Grebner’s problem if he cannot distinguish between people blowing up buildings and people rescuing animals.”

Fausey said the real issue was that people wanted to know why pets are being sold for experiments and why these research facilities aren’t able to raise their own test animals. Fausey said concerned residents also wanted to know why Ingham County has tried to “destroy” FICAS, which she called a productive animal rescue volunteer group.

Subject: [VeganWay] OPINION: PETA’s money supports terrorists

Activists,

I was not defending PETA's methods, I was defending PETA's ideology,
which is the movement's ideology.  Just because I agree with PETA' s
philosophy does not mean that I agree with every PETA tactic.  It
would be like saying that if someone is pro-life, that person also
agrees with bombing abortion clinics and killing doctors.

I stopped donating money to PETA a few years ago because we, the
grassroots activists, have to use money out of our own pockets for
things like flyers, posters and other art supplies, media equipment,
billboards, etc., and PETA just wastes thousands of dollars like
this.  We could sure use that money.

PETA's money supports terrorists
(letter to editor)
The Waterbury Republican American
04/16/03

I couldn't help but notice in Barbara Biel's April 9 letter, "PETA's
ideology, mission unchanged," there were some glaring omissions.  For
the sake of accuracy, I will add some facts Ms. Biel carefully
omitted:

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals supports terrorism.  PETA
paid $45,000 for the defense fund for convicted arsonist Rodney
Coronado, who blew up an animal-research lab in Michgan.  PETA also
provided a $25,000 loan to Mr. Coronado's father, which was never
paid back.

PETA has given monetary support to the Earth Liberation Front (ELE),
a group listed by the FBI as one of America's largest domestic terror
groups.  Among their acts are setting a fire at a Vail, Colo., ski
resort, resulting in $12 million dollars in damage; burning a U.S.
Forest Service laboratory in Pennsylvania, causing $700,000 in
damages; and of course, the occasional blowing up of sport-utility
vehicles.

PETA paid $5,000 to Josh Harper, who was convicted of assaulting
police and firing on a fishing vessel.

PETA paid $2,000 to Dave Wilson, who was convicted of firebombing a
fur cooperative.

PETA paid $7,500 to Fran Tuft, who was convicted of attempted murder
of a medical executive.

PETA's Vegan Campaign Coordinator Bruce friedrich was caught on tape
saying, "I think it would be a great thing if all these fast-food
outlets and these slaughterhouses and the banks that fund them
exploded tomorrow."

PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk once said, "The world would be an
infinitely better place without humans in it at all."  Only without
some, Ingrid, only without some.

45 roosters trained for combat found in Half Moon Bay shack
By Tim Hay, STAFF WRITER
ANIMAL control officers raided a rugged shack at the back of a daisy field off Highway 1 Thursday afternoon, and seized 45 roosters they believed were being used in cockfights. Acting on a tip from the man leasing the land, Sgt. Steve Frias of the Peninsula Humane Society and several other officers wrenched a padlock off the door of the 30-foot-long coop, which was cobbled together with corrugated plastic, tin and bits of junk wood.

Inside, they were greeted by the din of screaming roosters and hens, and found evidence of an animal sport so bloody, it's a felony in several states.

"It's rare that we find a setup like this," said Laurie Feazell, field supervisor of the raid. "We know it's happening throughout the County, but a lot of people are afraid to come forward if it's their neighbors who are doing it."

Inside the shack -- subdivided into dozens of tiny stalls separated with empty fertilizer sacks and chicken wire -- officers found a stash of injectable steroids and B-vitamins, syringes, machetes, tethers that can be used to lead roosters to and from the ring, and a hacksaw that is often used to cut spurs off roosters' talons.

But animal control officers found no evidence of a cockfighting arena or any metal spurs as they served their search warrant Thursday.

A rooster's natural spurs -- similar to a thumb on a human hand -- are replaced with sharpened metal gaffs, ensuring that most cockfights go to the bitter end, Frias said.

"The loser dies," he said.

Many roosters in the shack had the combs removed from their heads, which Frias said was done to give them a "sportier, fighting look."

None of the roosters was injured. A barrel of chicken feed had been infested by rats, and several rats that could not climb back out had died.

Officers spent hours removing the fowl from their stalls with large nets, as the roosters screeched and fluffed their plumage menacingly.

"They're inherently aggressive animals, bred to fight," Frias said.

Frias said the roosters -- and several loose hens -- would be kept at the Humane Society for 14 days in the hope that their owners would come forward to claim them.

If the owners appear, they will face charges from the District Attorney's Office, Frias said. It's a misdemeanor in California to own or raise fighting cocks. If the owners do not come forward, all the animals will be "humanely destroyed," according to Frias.

According to the Humane Society, Burt Silva, who leases the sprawling daisy farm where the coop was erected, does not know who built the shack or when.

Eric Sakach, director of the West Coast region of the Humane Society of the United States, said there is big money in cockfighting, with tens of thousands of dollars sometimes changing hands at a single tournament.

"It's gotten very bizarre in the last few years," Sakach said. "There's been an explosion in California since cockfighting went felony in surrounding states."

Arizona and Nevada have made the sport a felony, he said, and Oregon was poised to do the same. A proposal to make cockfighting a felony in California is still pending in Sacramento, he said.

Feazell said cockfighting had been reported at other Coastside locations, and in Daly City and Menlo Park, but that officers had never seized such a large number of fighting roosters in a single raid before.

Subject: FAST ACTION NEEDED TO RESTORE TEXAS REASON

Dear Texas Friends,

In Austin, a bill to permit humane horse slaughter is at a critical stage. After passing through the House Agriculture committee, H.B. 1324 is now pending in the House Calendar committee, which is responsible for assigning the bill a hearing date in front of the full House. However, the Calendar committee has the option of withholding the bill from the full House, and animal rightists are attempting to use this opportunity to sidetrack the measure. Although H.B. 1324 is a Texas state bill, it will affect horses all over the U.S., because Texas is home to the only two horse slaughterhouses in the U.S.

Currently, these facilities, which have functioned for decades without problems, are threatened by an obscure and long forgotten state law. H.B. 1324 is the legislature's attempt to allow them to continue to operate. Rather than have, old and infirm horses sold for use as zoo carnivore food or into the foreign meat market, the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) and its animal rightist allies want to force horse owners to have veterinarians euthansize horses and dispose of them at an estimated cost of $300 per animal. Regardless of how you feel personally about the issue, rescue frequently isn't an available option and Texas horse owners and others should have choices which HSUS hasn't predetermined for them.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
1. Texans should contact Governor Rick Perry and let him know that H.B. 1324 needs to pass and he needs to sign it when it does.

Send an email through: http://www.governor.state.tx.us/contact
2. Contact the members of the Texas House Calendar Committee, and ask them schedule House Bill 1324 for floor consideration. Let them know that the legislature should not cater to the will of out-of-state animal rightist activists who know little about proper animal husbandry and are only bent on controlling others' lives. Tell them that you want your representatives to have a chance to vote on H.B. 1324.

3. Texans can also take a few extra moments to contact each member of the Calendar committee separately, as this will have the maximum impact.
