NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities raided a cockfight in New York City and arrested more than 70 people on animal fighting and other charges, prosecutors said.

Nineteen roosters and more than $17,000 were seized in the Saturday night raid on a Bronx building equipped with steel doors, security guards and lookouts with radios, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Sunday.

Steven Reed, a spokesman for the Bronx District Attorney's Office, said eight people were awaiting arraignment Sunday on felony animal fighting charges. Sixty-nine other people were charged with misdemeanor counts, and five people were arrested on outstanding warrants for unrelated charges, he said.

The building also housed food stands, a dice table and a bar, authorities said.

ASPCA agent Joseph Pentangelo said the seized roosters would be euthanized. "After they've been conditioned this way, they're really beyond rehabilitation," he said.
