BOMB EXPLOSIONS AT BIOTECH FIRM

Two small bombs which exploded early Thursday, August 28, at the Chiron Corp compound in Emeryville California have made front page news in the San Francisco Chronicle and garnered some coverage in many major newspapers across the US.

The Friday, August 29, Chronicle front page story, by Stacy Finz and Bernadette Tansey, is headed, "2 bombs shatter biotech firm's windows."

It opens with:

"Two bombs planted at Chiron Corp. in Emeryville caused minor damage when they exploded early Thursday just hours after the company warned employees that animal rights activists were targeting the biotechnology firm.

"Law enforcement officials said they had no suspects in the case but wouldn't rule out the possibility that activists upset about animal experiments used in developing biotech drugs were involved. As of Thursday night, no one had taken responsibility for the explosions.

We learn that Chiron executives have also been harassed in their homes. For example, "One top manager's car was vandalized with the words 'Puppy killer' on the windshield."

The article tells us, "The protesters are angry over the company's past relationship with Huntingdon Life Sciences, which does scientific experiments on animals and has been accused by activists of mistreating primates, beagles and other experimental animals."

Though Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, or SHAC, does not take responsibility for the blasts, the reporters share a message from the SHAC website which says that SHAC "continues to lend its ideological support to any action that contributes to efforts at ending suffering and death, provided that the action does not cause harm to any human or nonhuman animal."

And SHAC's Kevin Jonas is quoted in the article saying that Chiron is fair game since it is considered to be "an ongoing and future source of revenue for Huntingdon until we get that public statement saying, 'We'll never use (Huntingdon) again'" .

The Chronicle offers more on the Chiron/HLS link with another story by Bernadette Tansey on page A23, headed, "Chiron secondary target of activist network; Contractor accused of animal cruelty."

We read of the five year international campaign against HLS, which drove the company out of the UK, and which "has already succeeded in driving major U.S. investors and other business associates to desert Huntingdon, which in 2001 was sold to a U.S. holding company, Life Sciences Research Inc., incorporated in Maryland."

You can read the front page story on the web at:

and the related HLS story at:

The Los Angeles Times also gave the story prominent coverage on the front page of its California Metro section (Part 2, page 1). The article, by Marcelo Rodriguez and John M. Glionna, is headed,

"Biotech Firm Rocked by Blasts; Authorities say animal rights activists may have placed the pipe bombs. A group condones the act but doesn't claim responsibility for it."

It includes a quote from SHAC's Andrea Lindsay stressing non-violence: "We certainly don't tell people to go out there and engage in illegal activities, but if it happens, we applaud it. We're happy to see any activity that causes economic sabotage to Huntingdon and its supporters, as long as no humans or nonhumans are hurt." She calls the bombings a "justifiable case of economic sabotage" that "sends a message loud and clear to customers of Huntingdon that they cannot go about business as usual without repercussions."

You'll find the Los Angeles Times article on the web at: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-bombs29aug29,1,7385997.story?coll=la-headlines-california  You may need to register at the LA Times site to read it.

The Contra Costa Times had a similar in depth story on page F4 of the Friday, August 29 paper, headed "Bombs explode near offices,"

by Guy Ashley, Matt Krupnick and Judy Silber. It includes some information on HLS: "Protesters say Huntingdon uses tens of thousands of animals to test medicines, household cleaners and other substances." Jonas is quoted again, making it clear that SHAC supports such actions as long as nobody gets hurt, "If it is claimed by an animal rights activist and they knew nobody would be around, then we would definitely support it."

You'll find the article on line at: http://www.bayarea.com/mld/cctimes/news/local/crime_courts/6646741.htm

The incident was also a "top story" penned by Lisa Fernandez, Dana Hull and Yomi S. Wrongein the San Jose Mercury News. That article says that "Chiron manufactures drugs to fight kidney cancer, cystic fibrosis and multiple sclerosis. Drug companies are required to test new drugs on animals and humans before they are marketed." It notes that Chiron contracts with Huntingdon Life Sciences which also tests on animals, but it makes no mention of the allegations of animal abuse and the damning video documentation of HLS experiments. The article notes,

"Most animal rights groups do not condone violence. But many said they are happy when any act brings economic hardship to companies that do animal testing." You'll find it on line at:

Across the US, the story also received a few lines of coverage in the August 29 editions of The New York Times (Pg A 14), The Washington Post ( Pg. A15) the Philadelphia Inquirer (Pg. A04), the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Pg. A-11), the Chicago Tribune (Pg. 15; ZONE: C), and the Akron Beacon Journal (Pg A3).

There are those in the animal rights movement who back such actions, and those who disapprove for fear of damage to our movement's reputation and because of the danger, whenever fire or bombs are involved, that someone could get hurt. But I think most of us agree on the need to spread the word about the cruelty of animal experimentation whenever we can. The extensive press generated by this story presents such an opportunity. Our letters to the editor can shift the focus from the illegal action to the sadly legal but unethical actions being targeted by the activists.

You can learn more about the campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences at: http://www.SHAC.net

The left side of the home page has a link to a page where you can 'watch SHAC videos on line': http://www.shac.net/MERCHANDISE/videos.html

The link "Watch the undercover videos from HLS" leads to a video of the treatment of beagles that is hard to watch.

The SHAC website also includes a page with information on the scientific issues regarding outdated animal research models:

http://www.shac.net/SCIENCE/index.html

Shorter letters to the editor are the most likely to be published. Credentials (medical, or involvement with animal or human rights or welfare groups) should be included. And letters must always include your full name, address, and telephone number.

Investigation Continues:  Animal Rights Radicals  Suspected, Claim of Responsibility Posted

Investigators from Joint Terrorism Task Force are still sifting through the remains left by two small, homemade bombs that exploded on the campus of Chiron Corporation headquarters in EmeryvilleCalifornia yesterday (August 28 ). No one was injured by the blasts that shattered windows of nearby buildings.  Fortunately, few people were on-site when the first device exploded shortly before 3 AM.   However, police were on the crime scene when the second  explosive device went off about an hour later.   Police found and detonated a similar looking  item around 7 AM, but say it was not a bomb.

http://www.oaklandtributne.com/cda/article/printe/0,1674,82%7E1865%7E1598923,00.html

This afternoon, the SHAC USA website linked to the online Bite Back magazine, which carries an claim of responsibility for the explosions. Bite Back, which lists convicted ALF felon Rodney Coronado as an editor, noted the claim had been received anonymously.  The message used extremely militant language and included threats of further violent action. It was signed: "for animal liberation through armed struggle, the Revolutionary Cells
--animal liberation brigade . "
Interestingly, Bite Back provides a link for reporters seeking a spokesman....which connects back to the SHAC USA website.

Before the claim of responsibility was made public, Dave Miller, FBI Special Agent in charge of the Task Force, which also includes ATF and local law enforcement agencies, told a reporter “we obviously are looking for suspects and clues that might lead us to who perpetrated this act.”  He said the incident has not been labeled as a case of domestic terrorism as yet, but the possibility that radical animal rights activists may have been responsible for the attack is being investigated.  http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/news/print_082803_iteam_emeryville_explosions.html

Despite hesitancy to form a premature conclusion, the likely connection of animal rights radicals to the blasts was the subject of speculation starting with the very first news report. http://www.foxreno.com/news/2439703/detail.html

It's people like the one who posted that, Mr Delmer Pritt, that makes the difference in current law and elected officials. We need more folks like Mr Pritt. People need to understand the depth of what we are up against. If the true red white and blue country folk don't take back control of gamefowling, the ARA's will.
