COCKFIGHTING BAN, PART 2

Three House committees will gather on the chamber floor Tuesday for another round of debate about banning cockfighting.

The Senate tabled a similar bill earlier in the session after hours of passionate testimony from people on both sides of the issue.

The hearing of the Agriculture and Water Resources, Consumer and Public Affairs, and Judiciary committees begins at 2:30 p.m.

At issue is House Bill 559, a proposed cockfighting ban sponsored by Albuquerque Republican Ron Godbey.

New Mexico and Louisiana are the only states that permit cockfighting.

Fowl Play

By Josephine Lee

The chicken in red gloves feints, ducking a vicious right from his blue-gloved opponent. He feints again--too late. He's pecked, and squawks in alarm. Then, in a maneuver that shows he's got the stuff of a true prizefighter, Red presses in close and tucks his head up and under his opponent's breastplate, thereby gaining safety and buying time. He's smarter. But Blue is stronger. It's still any chicken's game.

The crowd--mostly farmers--goes wild. This is no ordinary cockfight. Missing are such traditional hallmarks as disjoined necks, gouged eyeballs, punctured lungs and lush sprays of blood. Here the strapping-on of metal spikes or razors to the chicken's feet and head is prohibited. The cocks, for further protection, wear gloves covering their bony spurs.

Welcome to Thailand's Native Chicken Academic & Demonstration Center, an hour's drive south of Bangkok. Bankrolled by billionaire Dhanin Chearavanont, the center, with its computerized scoreboards, air-conditioned box seating and seminar rooms, is but one part of a plan by Dhanin, 63, to preserve and advance cockfighting--not just for sport, but as a springboard to promote Thai exports of chicken meat. You could call it the holistic approach to poultry.

At present, Thai fighting chickens stay home. Their tasty meat and high resistance to disease make them ideal domestic pets. Compared with their U.S. counterparts, Thai roosters are elegant and graceful: broad chests, lean, foot-tall physiques, rich plumage and red crowns. Their ancestry dates from the 16th century, when King Naresuan (1555-1605), a talented military strategist and brave warrior, conceived a yen for cockfighting and bred the birds for that purpose.

Today such fights are a central feature of rural festivities and the weekly open-air markets where Thai farmers gather to trade and do business. Unlike fowl farmed industrially, fighting breeds roam free, eating off the land. They're low in cholesterol. They get no hormones, antibiotics or chemicals, says Dhanin.

Dhanin's company, Charoen Pokphand (the CP Group), is the largest agribusiness conglomerate in Asia. Headquartered in Thailand, the group produces $9 billion worth of animal feed, broiler chicks, layer chicks, baby pigs, breeder pigs, fresh eggs, shrimp, fish and ducklings annually. It was the first Asian company to use vertically integrated, Tyson-style farm-to-market production techniques, both for hogs and poultry. Not quite half its revenue comes from farms and mills in China.

An organic upbringing is not accorded to the run-of-the-mill broilers produced by CP in its factorylike chicken coops. But Dhanin aims eventually to offer Thailand's free-range, chemical-free fighting fowl as a specialty item.

For the present, his goal is to give farmers an incentive to protect the fighting cock's health and unique genetics. Some farmers have crossbred their native birds with others from the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam. Result: Pure-bred Thai fighters are becoming something of a rarity. There is danger, too, of males dying (along with their genes) in cockfighting's traditional death matches. The genes are precious, since just 10% of males exhibit the aggressive behavior needed for combat. When these birds die, their harems (typically up to 12 hens each) go to lesser males.

In 1998 Dhanin began drawing up new rules for cockfights, borrowing heavily from the sport of boxing. "If it is humane enough for humans, it should be humane enough for the chickens," he says. Veterinarians check for the use of hormones and steroids, and the contest is limited to only five rounds or a maximum of one hour (unlike the traditional 12-hour death bout). A cock is judged to have lost if he runs away or emits the telltale squawk of submission. The match ends if there is a broken beak, continuous bleeding, too much swelling or the blinding of an eye. In these kinder, gentler fights, cocks walk away alive--albeit bearing a few bald, raw patches pecked clean of feathers on their heads and torsos.

"We want to keep the birds alive and healthy," says Paiboon Buranaragsa, the head veterinarian of Dhanin's Thai Indigenous Chicken Conservation & Development Association. Dhanin, who bred chickens as a boy, takes keen personal interest, tweaking designs for nesting coops and suggesting diet choices of crickets, tadpoles and worms. Since 1999 he has given 100,000 cocks away to serve as a breeding stock. He may be the only billionaire who tends chickens in his own yard.

So far only 20 out of the 1,000 licensed cockfighting venues in Thailand have agreed to adopt the new rules. But Dhanin has not yet brought all his influence to bear. He has enlisted the support of Thailand's departments of agriculture and development, arguing that the export of fighting chickens can help Thai farmers better their economic standing. The livestock department agrees. It estimates farmers who breed fighters earn as much as $558 a year from poultry, ten times the average farmer's take.

Letters Needed by March 22nd Re: Cockfighting in New Mexico

Forward Widely!

This message is for people everywhere who despise cockfighting. Let the
State of New Mexico know your feelings about Legal Cockfighting and Tourism
in their state.

Right now we have a real opportunity to help turn it around and make
cockfighting illegal in New Mexico. But time is short. Please read -- and
take action now!

BACKGROUND:  The day after a New Mexico Senate bill to ban cockfighting was
killed by the Senate conservation committee, Rep. Ron Godbey introduced a
House version of the bill. HB 559 has 15 cosponsors, which illustrates the
strong support that the bill has among representatives.

New Mexico is promoting tourism heavily, including a huge two-block-long
billboard in New York's Times Square. Though 81 percent of New Mexico voters
are opposed to cockfighting and support banning it, cockfighting proponents
say that it is tradition and that it is a staple of the New Mexico economy.

Cockfighting enthusiasts attach long knives and icepick-like gaffs up to 3
inches long to the birds' feet to make fights more "exciting," i.e.,
bloodier. The birds are bred to be aggressive and are pumped full of
stimulants, such as strychnine and testosterone, and blood-clotting drugs.
They suffer hideous injuries, including wings and legs slashed to shreds,
punctured lungs, severed spinal cords, and split eyes.

The fights are always to death!!!!!!

Won't you please write to New Mexico's head of economic development and cc
the governor to let them know that you won't visit the "Land of Enchantment"
until they stamp out this hideous tradition that should have been relegated
to the pages of history books long ago? Please don't delay. New Mexico's
legislative session ends March 22.

RE:  No Tourist Dollars for New Mexico Until You Stop Sanctioning Animal
Torture and Death!

Dear Honored Officials:

I am writing to tell you I won't spend my tourist or business dollars in New
Mexico, or buy New Mexico products until you stop sanctioning animal cruelty
and wrongful death in your state.

Though 81 percent of New Mexico voters are opposed to cockfighting and
support banning it, cockfighting proponents say that it is tradition and
that it is a staple of the New Mexico economy.

Mental health professionals and top law-enforcement officials consider cruelty
to animals a precursor to violent crimes against humans. The American
Psychiatric Association identifies animal cruelty as one of the diagnostic
criteria for conduct disorders, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
uses reports of animal cruelty in analyzing the threat potential of suspected
and known criminals. Experts agree that it is the severity of the behavior -
not the species of victim - that must be taken into account.

It is not safe to live or visit New Mexico while this vicious torture and
cruelty is allowed to flourish. The list of animal abusers who progressed to
hideous crimes against humans is from actual police files. Please put an end
to the brutal and senseless crime of cockfighting and ensure there are guaranteed
consequences for those who would subject living creatures to such senseless torture.

Your decision on cockfighting in New Mexico affects my decision to vacation
and do business in New Mexico as well as buy your state's products. The
safety of all visitors to and residents of New Mexico is at stake.

Sincerely yours,

ATTACHMENT: ANIMAL VICTIMS / HUMAN VICTIMS:
REPORTS FROM POLICE CASE FILES

Russell Weston Jr., tortured and killed 12 cats: burned and cut off their
tails, paws, ears; poured toxic chemicals in their eyes to blind them; forced
them to ingest poison, hung them from trees (the noose loose enough to create a
slow and painful death.) Later killed 2 officers at the U.S. Capitol in
Washington, DC.

Jeffery Dahmer staked cats to trees and decapitated dogs. Later he dissected
boys, and kept their body parts in the refrigerator. Murdered 17 men.

Kip Kinkle shot 25 classmates and killed several in Springfield, Oregon. He
killed his father and mother. Said he blew up a cow once. Set a live cat on
fire and dragged the innocent creature through the main street of town.
Classmates rated him as "Most Likely to Start World War 3."

As a boy, Albert De Salvo, the "Boston Strangler," placed a dog and cat in a
crate with a partition between them. After starving the animals for days, he
removed the partition to watch them kill each other. He raped and killed 13
women by strangulation. He often posed bodies in a shocking manner after their
murders.

Richard Allen Davis set numerous cats on fire. He killed all of Polly Klaus'
animals before abducting and murdering Polly Klaus, aged 12, from her
bedroom.

11-year-old Andrew Golden and 13-year-old Mitchell Johnson tortured and killed
dogs. On March 24, 1998, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Golden and Johnson shot
and killed 4 students and 1 teacher during a fire drill at their school.

After 16-year-old Luke Woodham mortally stabbed his mother, killed 2
classmates and shot 7 others, he confessed to bludgeoning his dog Sparkle with
baseball bats and pouring liquid fuel down her throat and to set fire to her
neck. "I made my first kill today," he wrote in his court-subpoenaed journal.
"It was a loved one...I¹ll never forget the howl she made. It sounded almost
human." In June 1998, Woodham was found guilty of 3 murders and 7 counts of
aggravated assault. He was sentenced to 3 life sentences and an additional 20
years for each assault.

Theodore Robert Bundy, executed in 1989 for at least 50 murders, was forced to
witness a grandfather who tortured animals. Bundy later heaped graves with
animal bones.

At 4-years-old, Michael Cartier dislocated the legs of rabbits and hurled a
kitten through a closed window. He later shot Kristin Lardner 3 times in the
head, before shooting himself.

Henry Lee Lucas killed numerous animals and had sex with their corpses. He
killed his mother, common law wife, and an unknown number of people.

Edward Kemperer cut up 2 cats. He later killed his grandparents, mother and 7
other women.

Richard Speck threw a bird into a ventilator fan. Killed 8 women. Randy Roth
taped a cat to a car's engine and used an industrial sander on a frog. Killed 2
of his wives and attempted to kill a third.

David Richard Davis shot and killed 2 healthy ponies, threw a wine bottle at a
pair of kittens and hunted with illegal methods. Murdered his wife, Shannon
Mohr Davis, for insurance money.

Peter Kurten, the Dusseldorf Monster, tortured dogs, and practiced bestiality
while killing animals. Murdered or attempted to murder over 50 men, women and
children.

Richard Trenton Chase, "The Vampire Killer of Sacramento," bit the heads off
birds, drained animals for their blood, killed animals for their organs, and
later killed 6 people in random attacks. One police officer present at the
scene of the first murder, confessed to having nightmares about the crime for
months afterwards.

"The Kobe Killer,² an as yet unnamed 15-year-old boy in Japan, beheaded a cat
and strangled several pigeons. Decapitated 11-year-old Jun Hase, and battered
to death a 10-year-old girl with a hammer, and assaulted 3 other children in
separate attacks.

Richard William Leonard's grandmother forced him to kill and mutilate cats and
kittens when he was a child. He later killed Stephen Dempsey with a bow and
arrow. He also killed Ezzedine Bahmad by slashing his throat.

Tom Dillion murdered people's pets. He shot and killed Jamie Paxton, aged 21;
Claude Hawkins, aged 49; Donald Welling, aged 35; Kevin Loring, aged 30; and
Gary Bradely, aged 44.

At 9-years-old, Eric Smith strangled a neighbor's cat. At 13, he bludgeoned 4-
year-old Derrick Robie to death. Smith lured the little boy into the woods,
choked him, sodomized him with a stick, then beat him to death with a rock.

David Berkowitz, "Son of Sam," poisoned his mother's parakeet out of jealousy.
He later shot 13 young men and women. 6 people died and at least 2 suffered
permanent disabilities.

Arthur Shawcross repeatedly threw a kitten into a lake until the kitten drowned
from exhaustion. Killed a young girl. After serving 15-1/2 years in prison, he
killed 11 more women.

Michael Perry decapitated a neighbor's dog. Later killed his parents, infant
nephew and 2 neighbors.

Jason Massey¹s killing resume began with cats and dogs; at 20 he decapitated
and disemboweled a 13-year-old girl and fatally shot a 14-year old boy. He
claims to have killed 37 cats, 29 dogs and 6 cows.

Patrick Sherrill stole neighborhood pets, tethered them with baling wire and
encouraged his dog to mutilate them. He killed 14 co-workers and himself in
1986.

Keith Hunter Jesperson, "Happy Face Killer," bashed gopher heads and beat,
strangled and shot stray cats and dogs. He is known to have strangled 8
women.
He said: "You're actually squeezing the life out of these animals...Choking a
human being or a cat--it's the same feeling...I'm the very end result of what
happens when somebody kills an animal at an early age."

Carroll Edward Cole, executed in 1985 for an alleged 35 murders and reputed to
be one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history, confessed that his
first act of violence was to strangle a puppy under the porch of his house.

Robert Alton Harris murdered two 16-year-old boys, doused a neighbor with
lighter fluid and tossed matches at him. His initial run-in with police was for
killing neighborhood cats.

One Dollar Is Too Much
On Friday, 29-year-old Mohamad Hammoud was sentenced to 155 years in prison for leading a smuggling ring that supplied funds to the militant Lebanese group Hezbollah. Hammoud was also convicted of sending $3,500 directly to the terrorist group. He and his cousin were the first to be tried under a new federal law that makes no distinction between terrorists and those who fund them.

In an Associated Press report, Assistant U.S. Attorney Ken Bell noted that "terrorist acts cannot be carried out without the wherewithal of those who fund them." When asked if the punishment fit the crime, Bell mused: "Is there a small contribution to a terrorist organization? I would say no."

A sage observation, considering that the U.S. Department of Justice has yet to arrest anyone at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in connection with that group's admitted 2001 donation of $1,500 to the terrorist Earth Liberation Front (ELF). The FBI puts ELF at the top of this nation's domestic terrorism watch-list.

Chickens Liberated from Maryland Lab
Received Anonymously by supportive aboveground groups in the US:

March 3, 2003

"In the early morning hours of February 27, 2003, the ALF liberated 115
chickens from Merial* Select Laboratory (10026 Main Street, Berlin, MD,
21811, Phone 410 641-2060, Fax 410-641-0768).

"In the midst of a snowstorm, we made our way to the animal housing
units. Using crowbars and boltcutters, we bypassed the alarmed doors by
prying and cutting our way through the window panes and wire mesh. After
crawling into several barns, we loaded 115 baby chicks into carriers and
brought them to safety. They have been taken to temporary housing to
live in a period of isolation to ensure that the possible diseases they
have been infected with do not spread to others. Afterwards, they will
be moved to permanent homes to live freely.

"Merial Labs will tell you their research into new vaccines is "helping"
animals. The truth is, they are creating vaccines to maximize an
animal's commodification of life.

"Countless animal research facilities commit their atrocities in
Maryland, but Merial was targeted specifically because they are a client
of Huntingdon Life Sciences. Any friend of HLS is an enemy of the ALF.
We know who their clients are. We are out there, and you're next.

UPC Editor's Note: Merial, which is a joint venture between the
pharmaceutical companies Merck and Aventis, owns the third largest
broiler chicken company in the world, Hubbard/ISA. Merial also owns
British United Turkeys Limited and extends internationally from the U.S.
to China. Berlin Maryland is on the Eastern Shore, one of the largest
poultry-producing areas in the United States comprising the Eastern
Shore of Maryland and Virginia and the state of Delaware. This area,
dominated by Perdue, Tyson, ConAgra, and other poultry companies, is
called the Delmarva Peninsula.

United Poultry Concerns is a nonprofit organization that promotes the
compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl.

Jon Saraceno
Jones goes up in class toward a giant payday

LAS VEGAS — Conceivably, he could've been as great as Sugar Ray Robinson. He should have been, at minimum, the Next Sugar Ray Leonard. Few practitioners of the sweet science have had sweeter natural ability and or had more unlimited potential bestowed upon them than Roy Jones Jr. For years, he dutifully slayed every mortal they put in front of him, but not so when it came to public opinion.

Until Saturday night's heavyweight drama, Jones likely was best remembered by most folks as being the precociously talented kid who got ripped off for an Olympic gold medal. He bears much of the responsibility for that because, like the man on trial who represents himself in the courtroom, many believed he had a fool for a client. Unlike Leonard, a supreme fistic and charismatic talent deftly moved by cunning management, Jones was self-managed and refused to be manufactured into an easily digestible superstar.

Leonard seemed to want to please; Jones, once he broke away from a domineering father, wanted to control everything around him. He was more like big Roy Jones Sr. than he knew, and his chip-off-the-old-block stubbornness seemed to grow in proportion with fame. Jones controlled his career and, in the process, managed to drive boxing's powerbrokers batty because he couldn't, or wouldn't, do it their way. He hunkered down on the panhandle of Florida, engineered bloody cockfights, raised chickens and dogs, went fishing and did his rap music thing.............
