Nine men were cited Sunday after the Merced County Sheriff’s Department busted up a cockfight north of Merced. Another man was cited for possessing cockfighting paraphernalia.
Officers acted on an anonymous tip around 2 p.m.
About 30 attendees were gathered in the front yard of a house in the 4700 block of West Shaw Street when officers arrived, said sheriff’s detective Frank Swiggart. Many of them escaped into the surrounding orchard, he said.
Three dead birds were found dead. Sheriff’s officers killed another two that were found wounded and confiscated 15 birds in cages. The property owner couldn’t be found during the bust.
“If it’s that close to his house, he has to have known it was going on. They
were all over his yard,” said Swiggart. Investigation into the property owner’s
connection to the fight was ongoing.

Hunters are the Hunted
|
|
By Sheriff Mike Cook |
| If you don't think that those groups who are attempting to stop
you from hunting, trapping, and fishing are not well funded I just read a
report where these groups filed their budgets with the IRS. I will list
the budgets below. In parenthesis are the budgets for immediate past years
so you can see raises they have gotten.
Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) * budget $3,208,308 ($3,360,726 / $3,133,399 / $2,929,360) programs $2,543,747 overhead $664,561 net assets $2,407,032 Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) (only one previous year available) * budget $1,260,416 ($1.072,951) programs $1,117,926 overhead $142,490 net assets $2,486,967 Doris Day Animal League (DDAL) * budget $2,570,372 ($2,844,347 / $2,743,811 / $2,298,227) programs $1,977,752 overhead $592,620 net assets $20,225,940 Fund for Animals * budget $7,358,207 ($5,600,721 / $5,386,201 / $6,383,888) programs $5,766,004 overhead $1,592,154 net assets $20,225,940 Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) * budget $67,272,795 ($58,865,207 / $50,431,797 / $51,560,147) programs $38,620,876 overhead $23,453,737 net assets $85,810,587 In Defense of Animals (IDA) * budget $2,304,433 ($2,339,784 / $1,841,705 / $1,707,270) programs $1,878,120 overhead $426,313 net assets $2,512,588 Foundation to Support Animals Protection (FSAP) * budget $2,192,281 ($2,430,555) programs $29,718 overhead $2,162,583 net assets $9,616,986 PETA and PCRM: Both will be listed as reports indicate they should be considered as a single fundraising unit because of its joint partnership in Foundation to Support Animals Protection list above. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) * budget $16,414,174 ($13,499,614 / $17,668,699 / $16,487,851) programs $13,741,587 overhead $2,672,587 net assets $5,079,120 Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) * budget $2,667,912 ($2,915,847 / $2,533,289 / $2,350,143) programs $2,107,232 overhead $560,680 net assets $887,109 So as you can see many of these organizations have a lot of money to buy politicians with and get their way. They are organized and some have even been listed by the FBI as Terrorist Groups. At least one organization has claimed responsibility for many crimes involving animal labs and other people who raise animals for food, not to mention their campaign against people who wear leather and skins of animals as clothing. This is a fight that must be won by the majority of the people in America who have a concern for our freedoms and heritage. I don't have all the answers, however I have been asked by people to name those who have helped get the large predators protected and planted. These are a few and I'm sure that if you follow the money most other groups are attached to them in one way or another. I said it before and this proves that this whole movement is a meal ticket for those who would take your freedoms. They are in it for the money and I still believe that most of them don't care about animals. Some may but the majority are there for the bucks. You must stand up and be counted now or we will lose it all to these special interest groups. God Bless America and God Bless our Troops still in harms way. Michael E. Cook, Coos County Sheriff, Retired. |
