Animal rights 'terror' rattles biotechs' cage

By Daniel S. Levine
The Business Journals

The biotechnology industry has called on President George W. Bush to help combat "a growing wave of terrorist" violence from animal rights activists.

In a letter to President Bush, Biotechnology Industry Organization President Carl Feldbaum highlighted the industry's concerns over the changing tenor of animal rights activism and called for government action.

"Animal rights terrorists have engaged in bombings of research facilities, harassment of the children of biotech executives in their schools, and vandalism of personal property," wrote Feldbaum. "Their campaign against biotechnology companies is strategic, specific, unrelenting and directed toward delivering economic, and sometimes physical, damage to companies engaged in innovation for life-threatening diseases such as cancer and cystic fibrosis."

Editorial: Elections go to the dogs

There are many sayings bemoaning the sometimes-cruel life of man's best friend.

We wouldn't treat a dog the way some people are mistreated. It is a dog-eat-dog world in this rough-and-tumble society.

But what about chickens, or more specifically, roosters? There is nary a peep about their pitiful existence.

A couple in Kellyville, Okla., received 10-year deferred sentences and $7,500 in fines Feb. 3 for pleading guilty on dogfighting charges. The couple had an arena on their property with its walls and floor covered with blood.

Dogfighting is illegal in all 50 states and a felony in 47 states and the District of Columbia.

The very next day, so-called gamefowl breeders from across Oklahoma, or more specifically those who raise roosters for cockfighting, descended upon the state Capitol demanding legislation that would usurp the will of the people.

Fifty-six percent of Oklahoma voters approved legislation in 2002 making cockfighting a felony, as 30 other states have done, including Texas.

However, the cockfighting lobby has so little respect for the ballot box that there is an orchestrated attempt to nullify an election by pushing legislation to allow individual counties the authority to either ban or permit cockfighting.

Cockfighting proponents should have thought of this legal loophole beforehand and avoided attempts to render a public vote null and void.

There seems to be little if any organized opposition to the fate of dogfighters.

Before cockfighting proponents trot out their misguided rationale, such as the constitutionality of a public vote, perhaps their needs to be an explanation of why it is such a doggone shame that chickens do not enjoy the same legal protection as canines.

Iams Continues Support of Anti-Hunters

(Columbus) - Despite a flood of contacts from sportsmen across the nation, a major pet food producer is still refusing to end its relationship with the nation’s largest anti-hunting group.  Sportsmen are now being urged to voice their complaints with the parent company and local suppliers.

In January, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance alerted outdoorsmen that the Iams Company, maker of Iams and Eukanuba pet foods, joined forces with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), as Grand National Sponsor of the Pet Fest America tour.  The tour is a series of animal shows, developed by HSUS, which are being presented in major metropolitan areas, nationwide.  They debuted in early 2003 and will continue through April 2004.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest and most vociferous anti-hunting organization.

Thus far, Iams has continued to recite the excuse that it was not aware of legislative issues with the sporting dog community.   However, it has shown no intention of ending its relationship with the anti-hunters.

In an effort to make Iams understand the error of backing anti-hunting groups, sportsmen are urged to contact Iams’ parent company, Procter & Gamble, to voice displeasure over the relationship.

Sportsmen are also urged to contact Iams retail dealers.

Some of the nation’s major consumer product and service firms, including General Mills, Accor Economy Lodging, Sears and Ace Hardware have ended relationships with HSUS after thousands of sportsmen levied strong protest.

Take Action!  Sportsmen should contact Procter & Gamble and educate the company about HSUS’s goals to end hunting, fishing, trapping and other forms of animal use.  Sportsmen should explain their frustration that its pet food company is promoting a program of the nation’s largest anti-hunting organization. Contact President Alan G. Lafley, The Procter & Gamble Company, 1 Procter & Gamble Plaza, Cincinnati, OH, 45202.  Phone (513) 983-1100.  Fax (513) 983-9369.
