The Monterey County Sheriff's Office is looking for anyone who has information about a North County slaying that apparently sprung from a cockfight on Friday.
Ramon Villegas, 45, was brought to Watsonville Community Hospital with a gunshot wound to his head, deputies reported. He later died from the wounds. He was taken to the hospital by a private car after leaving 244 Hall Road in Watsonville.
The area was an outbuilding on a 5-acre parcel. Deputies went out to the scene and saw remnants of a cockfight: a dead rooster and blood in the area.
Deputies have determined that there were 10 to 15 people in the area. Witnesses said that there was an argument and fight that led to the shooting.
Sheriff's Sgt. Doug Dahmen said that there were no attendees left after deputies arrived.
"I don't know how Villegas was involved, but he was there," Dahmen said.
Dahmen said cockfighting is an issue in North Monterey County. He said it is illegal and brings in problems of gambling and violence.
"It is a problem because of the cruelty issue," Dahmen said.
Villegas' brother, Jesse, said he didn't know much about his brother's death.
"I was shocked that he was taken to the hospital," said Jesse Villegas.
Ramon Villegas had lived in Watsonville for 33 years and worked as a truck driver.
He is survived by a wife and four children.

Area men among six arrested on drug charges
Officials raided Buckingham home
Published by news-press.com on
A pair of Lehigh Acres residents were among six men arrested last week on drug conspiracy charges, culminating a yearlong federal investigation of a drug distribution ring that ran from Southwest Florida to Brownsville, Texas.
Alberto Reyneros, 35, of 4008 Fifth St., and Juan Antonio Reyes, 35, of 210 Stanford St., were arrested March 3 after U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents, backed by the Florida Highway Patrol, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Customs, raided a home at 6391 Westwood Acres Road in Buckingham.
Law enforcement removed 3 kilograms of cocaine from the home with an estimated street value of $300,000. Also taken were a small amount of marijuana, weapons, a scale and a kilogram metal press.
“You are going to see a drop in the amount of readily available marijuana and cocaine in the area,” said Joe Kilmer, DEA spokesman.
Also removed from the home were 60 roosters — including 20 game roosters that had been shaved for fighting — with visible scars.
Lance Raiche, an investigator with Lee County Animal Control Services, said the agency will send a report to the state attorney’s office in order to determine what charges, if any, should be filed in connection with the alleged cockfighting.
The raid followed the search of a storage unit in Lehigh on March 2 by DEA agents that yielded 2 kilograms of cocaine concealed in a car battery. The drugs had an estimated street value of about $200,000.
Reyneros was charged with cocaine and marijuana conspiracy, and Reyes was charged with possession of cocaine.
Ernesto Garcia, 42, of Brownsville, is alleged by the DEA of developing drug supply sources and coordinating shipment and delivery. He was arrested in Brownsville and charged with cocaine and marijuana conspiracy.
Also arrested were Jesus Bueno, 44, of 22101 Peachland Blvd., Port Charlotte, charged with cocaine and marijuana conspiracy and possession of cocaine; Alberto Garza, 44, of 1660 O’Quinn Road, Immokalee, charged with distribution of marijuana and cocaine; and Luis Cuevas, 33, of 120 Palm Tree Lane, Fort Myers, charged with possession of cocaine.
“These names are not unfamiliar to us,” Douglas Molloy, chief assistant U.S. attorney, said. “The investigation is continuing. We intend to eliminate the entire smuggling and distribution organization.”
