  • Fowl Police Pluck Food Cooperative

There we were, minding our bidness, having fun at the February Delivery Day of the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, when in walks three nice looking fellows from the State Department of Agriculture, Food, and Foresty meat inspection compliance department, in search of FELONIOUS chickens. That is, chickens raised by humane and natural methods and processed on the farm by our producer members.

They had copies of a new law, which they say was passed by the last session of the Legislature, which amended the laws about on farm poultry sales to specifically exclude "third parties" in such transactions, and they say we are a "third party". They were there to do their job, which was enforce the law.

    Urgent Federal Felony Bill

Sat, 30 Apr 2005 Senate Bill 382 passed through the Senate unopposed last night. Sen. Ensign, from Colorado had a plan to hotline the bill on the floor. It worked! What this means is: In this case, it skips the committee mark-up and brings the bill to the Senate floor for immediate action, without a Senator objecting would simple pass.

Enclosed is a guideline to use for contacting your State Senator in regards to HR 817 and S 382. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Congressmen have told UGBA that our people are not calling and that the animal rights activists are constantly making contact. Please make copies and distribute them to friends & neighbors and urge them to write, call or e- mail. And remember to be nice and professional when contacting your Senator. Let's show that we have class, unlike the animal rights groups.

PETA Targets J.Lo at Film Premiere

The Associated Press Published: May 2, 2005

LOS ANGELES-J.Lo's latest critics include the PETA crowd. Dozens of protesters representing People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals greeted Jennifer Lopez at the premiere of her new movie "Monster-in- Law" with signs declaring her the "monster-in-fur" for her Sweetface fashion collection.

The protesters, who included some people dressed in animal suits, complained that they have asked several times that Lopez eliminate fur from her clothing line but have been ignored.

    Quotes from famous ARA's

"Christianity is our foe. If animal rights is to succeed, we must destroy the Judeo-Christian religious tradition." Peter Singer

"My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture" John Paul "JP" Goodwin

"If you take the attitude that one form of animal use is acceptable, then you can't criticize anything else" Wayne Pacelle, HSUS

In this issue the GFN News Staff thought it best to give the ARA's a breather, a breath of fresh air. They need time to catch up to us.

Veteran animal rights activist jailed after threat in court

Owen Bowcott Saturday April 30, 2005 The Guardian

Moments after being spared prison, the veteran animal rights activist Keith Mann landed himself in jail yesterday by openly threatening the director of a research laboratory who was sitting in court.

The act of defiance forced Judge Richard Price to reconvene proceedings at Portsmouth crown court, conduct a trial on the charge of contempt of court and sentence Mann, 38, to six months in prison.

    We play for keeps

From Responsible Pet Owners Alliance. Responsible Pet Owners Alliance is an animal welfare organization, not "animal rights" and, yes, there is a difference.

Nationwide Action Alert! Texas HB 1096/ SB 1111 - BSL Threat "One More Time!" We need your help to keep the senate bill from being heard in committee. May 1, 2005

HB 1096 passed the House before we could organize opposition, but to date there has been NO Senate hearing scheduled for the companion bill SB 1111.

We were told by Committee Chair Senator Whitmire's office that they have been overwhelmed with phone calls in opposition to SB 1111, but the calls have slowed down. We appreciate your previous help and ask if we could have "one more round" of protests to help us kill this bill. You may be very brief. Just the large volume of calls and emails can help us tremendously.

You may receive Senator Ellis's form letter saying that his office is working with Responsible Pet Owners Alliance and the American Kennel Club regarding this bill. Although RPOA was contacted regarding our objections and sent our objections to his office, we have heard nothing from them. So I wouldn't say we are negotiating. Rather it appears they hope the opposition will die down and the bill could slip through committee with 24 hrs. notice.

HB 1096 / SB 1111 would exempt Houston from existing state law prohibiting Breed Specific Legislation and imposes excessively harsh provisions on all Houston dog owners.

Our legislature adjourns on May 31, so there will be increased pressure to schedule a hearing on this bill to move it out of committee.

SB 1111 states that: "Subchapter D [in existing state law] does not apply to a municipality subject to this chapter." While not naming breeds specifically, it will allow Houston to do so in the future.

Talking Points: * SB 1111 will not stop dog attacks in Houston. * Texas already has a very strong Dangerous Dog Law. * Texas, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma and Virginia all have a provision prohibiting municipalities from passing Breed Specific Legislation. SB 1111 would be taking a step backwards for Texas. * Breed Specific Legislation is canine profiling and discrimination against certain breeds of dogs, regardless of temperament, training or behavior. Many so-called "pitbulls" are great family dogs and pose no threat to the community. * Although SB 1111 doesn't name breeds of dogs, the publicly stated intent of Rep. Al Edwards is to regulate Rottweilers and "pitbulls" in Houston. * Rep. Edwards has stated on a Houston television station that he wants the bill to be amended to apply statewide.
