Reading the above stories makes one wonder how people could believe that giving a rooster a shot of some drug to thicken its blood would make any sense at all, Anyone who has ever seen a cockfight knows that chickens fight very fast.    Their movements are a blur to most spectators. The drug to thicken the blood slows their heart rate, makes them fight slower, no doubt
leading to a loss.

As to giving them a drug to make them more aggressive that is a joke, there is no such drug, never was, never will be. Gameness is bred into these birds, it will not be found in a bottle. Chicken fighters are like the rest of American society: smart cockers and dumb cockers. As you see in any field of endeavor, the 'miracle' potions and elixirs you see advertised in the magazines are sold to the dumb ones.

The Humane Societies and PETA have told this lie about the drugs now for over thirty years and the media they talk to, print what they are told. The reporters have done much to destroy a breed of fowl that are so very, very  much better bred than they are. They have much to answer for. Remember if you tell a lie long enough people will believe it.  When the humane groups confiscate these chickens they destroy every one, If  cockfights were left alone and not raided at least half of the birds would go home safe and sound. Where is the be good to animals in this? How is this protecting animals?

PETA donates $1,500 to local animal shelter

By JUSTIN LANG jlang@lakecityreporter.com

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has given a $1,500 grant to the Lake City Humane Society and Animal Shelter as a reward for boycotting products from a well-known pet food manufacturer.

According to PETA, the Lake City shelter was one of 15 in the nation to receive its financial help because it does not "promote or in any way support" Iams, the pet food subsidiary of corporate conglomerate Proctor and Gamble.

PETA maintains that Iams practices "painful and often deadly laboratory tests on dogs, cats, and other animals."

The Dayton, Ohio-based Iams Company, however, says that PETA's allegations are based on events at a laboratory it - and other pet food companies - contracted with more than two years ago and no longer uses.

Margaret Smith, director of the local shelter, said she was aware of Iams and its alleged practices through magazine articles and information from PETA.

"I guess it all boils down to animal testing and at the animal shelter we are certainly against that," she said.

Smith said she received a questionnaire from PETA about Iams and the animal shelter's use - or lack thereof - of its products. After filling it out and returning it, she said PETA contacted her about receiving the grant for not using or promoting Iams.

Smith said she has already received the $1,500 and put it in the animal shelter's general operating fund to buy dog and cat food.

"It's a big help," she said.

The animal shelter often has pet food donated, but when it buys its own (usually Purina brand) Smith said she uses coupons and watches prices closely, meaning $1,500 will likely go a long way.

After receiving the grant, Smith said she had a call from Iams and said, "I think they are doing everything they can to get their good name back."

According to PETA, it conducted an undercover investigation at a laboratory contracted by Iams that revealed 27 dogs were killed during a study and others died of illness without veterinary treatment. PETA also alleged "the company has cut dogs' vocal chords so as not to disturb laboratory workers and has left sick animals to suffer alone and without care in barren cages."

"Nearly 100 shelters have decided to boycott Iams after learning about the company's cruel and unnecessary tests on animals," PETA Senior Vice President Mary Beth Sweetland said in a statement. "Iams uses its profits to create misery for dogs and cats, but these shelters need funds for their vital work of protecting animals from harm."

Kurt Iverson, spokesperson for Iams Company, said PETA is "spreading a lot of untruths and sensationalized stories."

"The story that they are telling is based on a facility we used two years ago and that we no longer use," he said. "They also don't tell you that the person that was gathering their video footage was the person Iams was paying to take care of those dogs and cats."

Iverson said pet owners and shelters can educate themselves about Iams research practices at www.iamstruth.com, as well as learn about the company's International Animal Care Advisory board. The board, he said, is made up of third-party animal experts such as members of the U.S. Humane Society and its purpose is to establish the best practices for humane research in the pet product industry.

Iverson said members of the board have the authority to perform unscheduled inspections at all of Iams' research facilities to "make sure the rules are being followed."

Recently, he said Iams also helped for a sixth year in a "Home for the Holidays" campaign which aided more than 1,300 animal shelters nationwide in finding matches for about 3,000 adoptable pets.

Is There A Link Between Animal Rights And Criminal Actions?

Questions raised in panther case

Group says suspects were pressured

By DENES HUSTY III
dhusty@news-press.com
Published by news-press.com on January 27, 2005

A civil rights group is alleging that some defendants might have been pressured into entering pleas in a Collier County animal cruelty case.

"There may be material misrepresentations of fact, possibly even a conspiracy to commit fraud on the court," states a letter sent by the Center for Civil Rights Advocacy to Collier County Judge Ramiro Manalich.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, denied that there has been any wrongdoing in the handling of the case.

The case involves three men who are each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit animal cruelty by allegedly using a goat to bait a Florida panther.

Each misdemeanor count carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Two of the men, Jack Shealy, 45, and Richard Scholle, 58, both of Ochopee, pleaded no contest to their charges. The third man, Jan Michael Jacobson, 62, of Ochopee, has pleaded not guilty and has demanded a jury trial.

The three in June allegedly used a goat as bait to capture on video a Florida panther that had been raiding their petting zoo livestock at their campground in Ochopee.

The goat lived, although Assistant State Attorney Beverly Brennan said she has a photograph of the panther with its jaws around the goat's neck. The panther was later captured by state wildlife officers.

A sentencing hearing for Shealy and Scholle was delayed Wednesday because Jacobsen has asked for a trial.

All three cases are being combined, and Shealy and Scholle will be sentenced after Jacobson's case is resolved, Brennan said.

During the hearing, Manalich told Brennan that he had received the letter from the civil rights group that raises "some serious allegations."

The judge placed the letter in the case file.

Walter Pine, a disabled Army veteran and executive director of the Titusville-based organization, said the letter was sent to make Manalich aware of some concerns the group has.

For instance, "at least one defendant stated that if they, defendants, obtained legal counsel, they had been told by investigators and the prosecutor that they would be denied a plea bargain," the letter states. The letter doesn't name the defendant.

Further, the defendants were told that "state and federal agencies would take action to revoke their licenses and permits to operate their campground," the letter states. Shealy runs the campground with his brother, David Shealy, who is not charged in the case.

Pine said Wednesday he personally heard some of the comments by officers.

The letter goes on to state that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has had a policy of feeding livestock and wild animals to caged Florida panthers.

There have been no sufficient studies to determine whether Florida panthers pose a threat to people.

Pine said his group offered to arrange legal representation for the defendants, but Shealy and Scholle declined.

Scholle refused comment Wednesday. Shealy could not be reached for comment.

Jacobson's attorney, James Cummins, of Inverness, could not be reached for comment.

In response to the allegations in the letter, Brennan said Shealy and Scholle freely and voluntarily waived their rights to attorney representation and entered pleas of no contest in the case.

The next hearing for Shealy and Scholle is scheduled for March 22. The prosecutor said she hopes Jacobsen's case can be resolved by then.

Forty-four Dead Cats And A Psychological Evaluation Of A 71 Year Old Woman?
What Does Animal Rights Contribute To Society?
Does It Appear The AR Have Compassion For Either Animals Or Humans?

Majority Of Cats Found In Back Of Truck Destroyed

The Associated Press
ROSWELL  —   Most of the sick cats found in the back of a moving van last week have been destroyed, officials said.
Forty-four of the 61 cats found in the truck driven by Mary Jane Lyle, 71, of Minden, Mich., have been euthanized.
A Roswell police officer pulled over the van Jan. 19 because a taillight was out. While the officer was talking to Lyle, he heard noises that appeared to be an injured cat.
Lyle told him she had a cat. But when the officer opened the back of the truck, he discovered 63   —   two of them dead.
Lyle has pleaded not guilty to 61 counts of animal cruelty. No trial date has been set.
Roswell animal control supervisor Joseph Pacheco said this week the cats that were destroyed had been examined by a veterinarian. The 44 cats were suffering from ailments ranging from skin parasites to respiratory problems, Pacheco said.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a national animal protection group, sent a letter Monday to Roswell's city attorney suggesting Lyle might be an "animal hoarder."
PETA recommended she be banned for life from contact with animals, that any animals in her custody be taken away and that authorities in Minden and Tucson, Ariz., where she was heading, be notified of the case.
PETA also asked that Lyle receive a psychological evaluation, followed by mandatory counseling at her expense.
Psychological treatment may be more important than jail time, said Daniel Paden, a caseworker at PETA headquarters in Norfolk, Va.
"Incarceration is by no means our priority," he said. "Putting a 71-year-old woman in jail isn't going to answer any problem."

Could We Call This Discrimination In Kansas?

Residents petition city for poultry

By MELISSA SHUMAN

Kansan Staff Writer

The Aleman family said they're getting rid of 50 roosters and chickens today.

Rosario Aleman applied for a special permit to keep the animals, but members of the Unified Government Planning Commission denied the permit- citing a possible history of cockfighting at the residence, police intervention and a detrimental effect on surrounding homes.

Since Rosario, who immigrated from Mexico, speaks little English, her son Apolonio Aleman spoke to the commission Jan. 10 on her behalf. Aleman said the family wants to keep the chickens and roosters to provide meat and eggs.

"It's kind of a tradition," he said. "In Mexico, we always had them, but here it's not allowed."

At the Aleman home on 1841 S. 88th St., a chicken coop in the backyard encircles an open square where the chickens feed. Aleman said the open square allowed the chickens exercise. He said the home has 5 acres of land, which gives the birds space. About 20 roosters, along the side, are kept in separate pens. Aleman said there is no cockfighting at the home.

"Since it's illegal in every state but Louisiana, we had planned to breed them and ship them to Mexico," he said. "But it didn't work out."

Just Another Hate Campaign?

........it turns out the ban wasn't so much to save the cute little fox, but to stick it to the rich people....

Tally Ho!

By John Gibson

On my show Thursday, you heard FOX News' Douglas Kennedy's report on PETA (search) and the troubles they are having once somebody turns the tables on them. It reminded me of how the PETA folks — along with some others — have managed to get fox hunting (search) banned in Great Britain.

Of course the Brits have their hearts on their sleeves about everybody and everything: What did you do for tsunami victims today; what did you do for AIDS today, what did you do for Africa today?

This jihad was about those cute red foxes, which, it turns out, have become an enormous pest in Britain because there are no wolves around anymore to eat them.

Anyway, in the British countryside they've been hunting foxes for a long time using packs of hounds chasing the fox and a bunch of stuffy Brits on horses chasing the hounds.

And it turns out the ban wasn't so much to save the cute little fox, but to stick it to the rich people who have the money and time to saddle up and chase the dogs chasing the fox.

In Texas, where I have a small ranch, we have a coyote problem. They come around and grab your cat, or dog if they can. People try to shoot them, but they hide during the day. Or they get a donkey put it in the field and he'll chase them down and stomp them to death.

While they ban hunting foxes in Britain, in Texas the law says you can hunt and kill coyotes at any time by any means.

If an Iraqi insurgent came to Texas, I guess technically he could use his RPG to blow up coyotes and nobody would care. It would be legal.

So you were wondering about the differences between us and the Brits? Here you have it in a nutshell:

We say shoot the coyotes — use landmines if you want.

The Brits won't let you hunt a fox — not that they care about the fox, but because hunting foxes is what rich people do and so they're against it.

That's My Word.

Subject: Virginia Legislation Update

A SAOVA message to sportsmen, pet owners and farmers concerned about protecting their traditions, avocations and livelihoods from anti-hunting, anti-breeding, animal guardianship advocates. Forwarding and cross posting, with attribution, encouraged.

Dear Sportmen Friends,

You'll be interested in the Virginia bill update below. The statewide pet sterilization bill, HB2927, was the subject of my message to you last weekend. I'd intended that message to serve as dramatic example of what might happen to animal owners in even a very conservative state. Since I failed to remove an "Action Call" subject tag, many of you weighed in supporting us here in Virginia. Thank you. VHDOA's Sunday message caused HB2927's sponsor to receive 800 opposition emails on that day alone. At noon on Monday, Delegate Kilgore told an outdoor writer that he was pulling HB2927, after introducing it late Friday. Hunting dog sportsmen and allied animal owners responded before others knew there was a problem, or "furst wit da mostst," as Nathan Bedford Forrest would say.

Please stay vigilant. Virginia's legislative sessions are among the shortest and most frenetic in the nation. Approximately 100 law bills are considered every working day and 48-50% are passed. You should have more time to recognize and react to bad bills in your own states. Many of these anti-animal owner bills turn up in state after state. It's wise to network with others, sharing intelligence, data and winning strategies. We're working to fix the mailman server's currently faulty archive retrieval.

Good luck and best wishes.

Subject: Fantastic News !!

Dear Virginia Friends,

Fantastic news from today's House AC&NR AG subcommittee meeting.

HB 1884 - Hargrove - License fee increases w/fees dedicated to spay-neuter programs) - Tabled (Near Dead, to be finished off 2/1)

HB 2723 - James Scott - Potentially Dangerous Dogs -  PBI - "Put this bill where the sun don't shine"

HB 2846 - James Scott - Prohibit gas euthanasia - PBI

HB 2859 - Peterson - Pet store inspections - PBI

HB 2927 - Kilgore - Forced Pet Sterilization - Struck

HJR 768 - Ward - Spay/Neuter Resolution - Reported (To Full Ctme on 2/1)

Sen. Potts has had dental surgery and his two bills, SB775 and SB952, await his return. Both are doomed, in my estimation. Only one AR bill is left standing, Sen. Locke's SB765 License fee increase bill w/a $10 sterilized fee cap and an initial $20 intact differential.

Thanks to everyone that worked so hard to protect our sport and hobby. It couldn't been done without your help.

PCRM's 'Public Service' Steals Meat Off Your Table

While the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) works hard to disguise its animal-rights agenda -- it's the group that the New York Times reported "has a PETA link" because it shares resources with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) -- it has finally come clean about its goal of stealing meat off your plate. And they've done it on video, no less! In one of three new "public service announcements," a voiceover pushes "vegetarian foods" while PCRM representatives go into a small restaurant and -- against the protest of the employees -- make off with any meat products, to be replaced with only vegetables. At the end of the ad, one labcoat-clad actor swipes a customer's burger right off the table. While it may have been an unsuccessful attempt at humor, pilfering our choices is precisely what food scolds across the country want to do.

PCRM's second ad claims: "The most dangerous thing our kids have to deal with today isn't drugs. It isn't violence. It's unhealthy food." Most parents would disagree. For a more informative spot, click here to see our ad on the dangers of violent animal-rights activists.
