Animal Rights Activist Sells Her Skin for Charity

LONDON (Reuters) - Looking for a unique way to support the fight against animal abuse?

The British founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world's biggest animal rights group, is auctioning off a lizard tattoo on her right arm -- with proceeds going to the charity.

Billed as "waterproof and weathered" and "suitable for making into a wallet or watch strap," the tattoo is being offered on Web site eBay to draw attention to the plight suffered by skinned animals.

"It's the only skin you can wear and use with the express permission of the original owner," said Ingrid Newkirk of her tattoo.

"Euphemisms like 'leather' and 'meat' help mask the cruelty that goes into stealing and slaughtering for clothing, trinkets and taste ... It may be uncomfortable to contemplate, but we're all flesh and blood," she said Tuesday.

The purchase price will be donated to PETA's "Shed Your Skin" Campaign, which promotes alternatives to leather and exotic animal skins.

But the winning bidder might have a long wait getting hold of the tattoo: it will only be delivered after its owner has passed away.

Tattoo auction of animal rights activist ended

LONDON (Reuters) - A plan by an animal rights activist to sell-off a lizard tattoo on her right arm has come unstuck after the online auction house she was using pulled the plug on electronic bidding.

eBay UK on Tuesday removed "Lizard Skin", an auction offered by Ingrid Newkirk, the British founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) because her ad breached guidelines.

PETA, the world's biggest animal rights group, said eBay regarded the tattoo as "human remains" which contravened the company's policy to not allow auctions of human body parts.

Newkirk said in a statement she was unimpressed by the move:

"I am just another animal, these are animal remains," she said.

"You can't miss the irony when it is acceptable to steal skins from their original owners and auction them off, but forbidden to auction a person's voluntarily offered skin to be surrendered only upon her death."

Billed as "waterproof and weathered" and "suitable for making into a wallet or watch strap", the tattoo was offered to draw attention to the plight suffered by skinned animals.

Proceeds had been due to go to charity.

From Consumer Freedom Comes.......

Crazy Like A Rabid Fox

Need a new wallet? Reuters reports that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) President Ingrid Newkirk is set to auction off a "waterproof and weathered" patch of her own tattooed skin on eBay. It seems that her hide is "suitable for making into a wallet or watch strap." Newkirk has declared that humans are "the biggest blight on the face of the earth." Now it would seem she is out to prove it.

The winning bidder will have to wait for Newkirk to die before taking delivery. Nonetheless, her zealous followers are now set to parcel up her body into relics like that of a revered saint.

A small patch of Newkirk's skin isn't the only body part for which she has post-mortem plans. She recently told onMilwaukee.com:

I plan to send my liver somewhere in France, to protest foie gras (liver pate) ... I plan to have handbags made from my skin ... and an umbrella stand made from my seat.

Her last will and testament contains a few more nasty morsels:

That the meat of my body, or a portion thereof, be used for a human barbeque ... my eyes be removed, mounted and delivered to the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency ...

We're left to guess which body part she'll auction off next. Maybe she'll start sending her toenail clippings to veterinarians to protest the declawing of cats.

ALF Supporters........ Who Does That Bring To Mind?

Animal Liberation Front supporters deserve no further attention

Staff Editorial

Last week, Steven Best, an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Texas-El Paso, gave a speech at the IMU that drew comparisons between the Animal Liberation Front - the terrorist organization responsible for last November's barbaric attack on Seashore Hall and Spence Laboratories - and abolitionists.

Unfortunately, this pronouncement was not the only bit of moral fatuousness Best displayed during his lecture to more than 100 audience members, but, given his propensity to draw analogies between the cruel enslavement of a human being and using rats to discover cures for cancer, this should not be surprising.

Of course, it's hard to know where exactly to begin when cataloguing the inanities of the Animal Liberation Front, much less that of its attention-craving supporter from El Paso. The vandalism of UI facilities last semester was not an isolated incident; indeed, the University of Minnesota saw similar destruction in April 1999 that, in the estimation of researcher Gilbert Low, "set back two years the research conducted on Alzheimer's disease and cancer" at those laboratories. Such a cost to scientific progress (and thus humankind) is justified, in the minds of these ecoterrorists, by the benefit of "liberating" animals: pigeons, mice, rats, and salamanders. Presumably, the mice escaped to the friendly confines of the nearest forest, where they were an evening's dinner for hawks.

What makes Best a caricature rather than a serious dissident is not his intellectual vapidity, colossal as it may be, but his unwillingness to distinguish between the life of a human and that of a rodent. Hence, the public's intelligence is insulted with his insistence that his dog's life is more important than that of a human stranger, along with his reticence to condemn blatant tactics of personal intimidation against researchers.

One reason for bringing Best to campus, according to the event's organizers, was to stimulate an important debate. It is unclear what exactly should be debated; the actions of the liberation front were illegal and completely unjustifiable. Period. And it is difficult to converse with an organization so self-assured in its convictions that it threatens innocent members of the UI community - who can no longer feel safe in their own homes - to achieve its ends.   Continued...

Sequoyah Co. deputies arrest seven for cockfighting

MULDROW, Okla. (AP) -- Six Arkansans and one Kansan were arrested in a cockfighting raid in eastern Oklahoma.

Sequoyah County deputies arrested the seven and seized video cameras and an undisclosed amount of money at a building north of Muldrow.

The seven arrested are all free on $1500 bond and District Attorney Richard Gray says charges of participating in cockfighting and operating a cockfight will be filed later this week.

Gray says this is the first cockfighting raid in Sequoyah County since state voters banned the blood sport in November 2002.

There have been at least two other cockfighting raids in the state. Three people were arrested in Oklahoma County last April and given probation.

Six people were arrested in Cotton County in June, their cases are pending.

Those arrested in Sequoyah County on a complaint of participating in cockfighting are identified as Hung Van Tu, 38, and Sameu Phommanvong, 52, both of Fort Smith, Ark.; Lor Xeng, 32, of Russellville, Ark.; Chantho Samountry, 49, of Branch, Ark.; Khamsourivong Thongdam, 62, Danville, Ark.; and Likorn Bounbongxay, 34, of Winfield, Kan.

Arrested on a complaint of operating a cockfighting facility is Noi Xayavongsa, 51, of Van Buren, Ark.

Could We Say Kindly Remind Officials That AR's Put The Whole Community At Risk?

UPC Brings You the Following.......

Urge Oklahoma Officials to Investigate Suspected Cockfighting

Please urge Broken Bow and McCurtain County officials, in Oklahoma, to investigate a property where a large number of birds are reportedly chained to small huts 10 miles north of Broken Bow, near the Beavers Bend Resort/Steven’s Gap Area exit off Highway 259. Photos obtained by PETA show conditions typical of properties where birds are raised and trained to fight. Kindly remind officials that blood sports such as cockfighting put the whole community at risk as they are not only cruel to animals but are often linked to other violent crimes. It is a felony to encourage cockfighting, possess or train birds for cockfighting, or maintain a facility for cockfighting in Oklahoma, and the federal animal Welfare Act prohibits interstate commerce of birds for fighting purposes.
