West Hollywood Mayor John Duran
to Introduce a Motion to Prohibit Dog Tail Docking and Ear Cropping and Other
Non-Curative Procedures in the City of West Hollywood
Duran, the author of the first anti-declawing ordinance in North America, is leading the charge against non-therapeutic procedures that are only performed to "improve" the aesthetics of animals.
"By docking the tails of dogs or cropping their ears, animals are subjected to painful and unnecessary procedures, and someone has to stand up to this cruelty. I believe the anti-declawing ordinance was the first step in addressing cruelty to animals, but we have to do more, and this proposed ordinance is the next step," said Mayor Duran.
"West Hollywood has never hesitated to take necessary actions to stop cruelty to animals," Mayor Duran added.
In 2003, the West Hollywood City Council adopted the first and only anti-declawing ordinance in North America and many cities are considering adopting similar rules or at least have condemned the practice of declawing. Declawing is believed by most pet owners to just entail the removal of the nails; however, it is widely known in veterinary circles that the declawing does not stop with the removal of the animal's nails but with the partial amputation of the paws, which can lead to infections and chronic pain.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Mercedes-Benz has agreed to offer "leather-free" versions of all its luxury cars to pacify an animal rights group that says thousands of cows are slaughtered each year for leather car seats and interiors.
After complaints from the German chapter of People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, DaimlerChrysler said its Mercedes
subsidiary will offer fabric or synthetic leather as options. Daimler
spokeswoman Ursula Mertzig-Stein said that far from wanting leather-free cars,
"our customers ... are more likely to want even more leather at the premium end.
But we'll make cars without leather on demand."
PETA officials, who had threatened protests at the carmaker's Stuttgart
headquarters, said they were delighted.
"When you consider that the skins of four to 15 cows are needed for each car
this means thousands of cows will be spared," said PETA researcher Edmund
Haferbeck. "This is a huge victory for animal rights."
.......A human and a chicken are of equal worth.......
The case for Judeo-Christian values: Human Worth
By Dennis Prager
http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | Would you first save
the dog you love or a stranger if both were drowning? The answer depends on your
value system.
One of the most obvious and significant differences between secular and
Judeo-Christian values concerns human worth. One of the great ironies of secular
humanism is that it devalues the worth of human beings. As ironic as it may
sound, the G-d-based Judeo-Christian value system renders man infinitely more
valuable and significant than any humanistic value system.
The reason is simple: Only if there is a G-d who created man is man worth
anything beyond the chemicals of which he is composed. Judeo-Christian religions
hold that human beings are created in the image of G-d. If we are not, we are
created in the image of carbon dioxide. Which has a higher value is not
difficult to determine. Contemporary secular society has rendered human beings
less significant than at any time in Western history.
First, the secular denial that human beings are created in G-d's image has
led to humans increasingly being equated with animals. That is why over the
course of 30 years of asking high school seniors if they would first try to save
their dog or a stranger, two-thirds have voted against the person. They either
don't know what they would do or actually vote for their dog. Many adults now
vote similarly.
Why? There are two reasons. One is that with the denial of the authority of
higher values such as biblical teachings, people increasingly make moral
decisions on the basis of how they feel. And since probably all people feel more
for their dog than they do for a stranger, many people without a moral
instruction manual simply choose to do what they feel.
The other reason is that secular values provide no basis for elevating human
worth over that of an animal. Judeo-Christian values posit that human beings,
not animals, are created in G-d's image and, therefore, human life is infinitely
more sacred than animal life.
That is why people estranged from Judeo-Christian values (including some
Christians) support programs such as "Holocaust on Your Plate," the People for
the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) campaign that teaches that there is no
difference between the slaughtering of chickens and the slaughtering of the Jews
in the Holocaust. A human and a chicken are of equal worth.
That is why a Tucson, Ariz., woman last year screamed to firefighters that
her "babies" were in her burning house. Thinking that the woman's children were
trapped inside, the firemen risked their lives to save the woman's three cats.
Those inclined to dismiss these examples as either theoretical (the dog-stranger question) or extreme (the Tucson mother of cats) need to confront the very real question of animal experimentation to save human lives. More and more people believe as PETA does that even if we could find a cure for cancer or AIDS, it would be wrong to experiment on animals. (The defense that research with computers can teach all that experiments on animals teach is a lie.) In fact, many animal rights advocates oppose killing a pig to obtain a heart valve to save a human life.
Belief in human-animal equivalence inevitably follows the death of
Judeo-Christian values, and it serves not so much to elevate animal worth as to
reduce human worth. Those who oppose vivisection and believe it is immoral to
kill animals for any reason, including eating, should reflect on this: While
there are strong links between cruelty to animals and cruelty to humans, there
are no links between kindness to animals and kindness to humans. Kindness to
animals has no effect on a person's treatment of people. The Nazis, the cruelest
group in modern history, were also the most pro-animal rights group prior to the
contemporary period. They outlawed experimentation on animals and made legal
experimentation on human beings.
The second reason that the breakdown of Judeo-Christian values leads to a diminution of human worth is that if man was not created by G-d, the human being is mere stellar dust — and will come to be regarded as such. Moreover, people are merely the products of random chance, no more designed than a sand grain formed by water erosion. That is what the creationism-evolution battle is ultimately about — human worth. One does not have to agree with creationists or deny all evolutionary evidence to understand that the way evolution is taught, man is rendered a pointless product of random forces — unworthy of being saved before one's hamster.

Anti's Tout Intentions to End Michigan Dove
Hunt
(Columbus) – The nation’s largest anti-hunting organization is spearheading an aggressive campaign to ban dove hunting in Michigan. The Humane Society of the United States’ (HSUS) new political arm, HSUS Fund for Animals, has announced its campaign to raise $100,000 to collect the 225,000 voters’ signatures necessary to put the future of Michigan’s dove hunt on the 2006 ballot. In previous anti-hunting campaigns, HSUS has used paid signature gatherers to qualify issues for the ballot. The anti’s appear to be employing the same tactic in Michigan. This action contradicts the antis’ claim that the Michigan anti-dove hunting campaign is a locally-driven, grassroots effort. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and its partners in the Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign worked with key lawmakers in 2004 to pass legislation that made Michigan the 41st dove hunting state. Sportsmen are now being called to action to save the hunt. “Michigan sportsmen must quickly mobilize their defense against the anti’s,” said U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Vice President for Government Affairs Rob Sexton. “The merger of the HSUS and the Fund for Animals and changes in the organization’s structure allow the group to utilize a significant amount of its reported $95 million in financial resources on anti-hunting issues.” Sportsmen previewed changes to the antis’ strategies when HSUS and the Fund for Animals pumped nearly $800,000 into a 2004 anti-bear hunting ballot issue campaign in Maine. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance is committed to work with other sportsmen leaders to develop a strategy to win at the polls in 2006. It will take an aggressive effort by sportsmen to counter the antis’ efforts. “The flood of money that the anti’s put into the Maine campaign was unlike anything sportsmen had seen,” said Sexton. “Fortunately, we organized early and raised money throughout the campaign to ensure a victory. Michigan sportsmen will need to muster even greater effort to protect dove hunting.” To get involved in the fight to defend Michigan’s proud hunting heritage, contact the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance at (614) 888-4868 or e-mail info@ussportsmen.org.
The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance protects the rights of hunters, anglers and trappers in the courts, legislatures, at the ballot, in Congress and through public education programs.
