    Boiling the Dog

Taking the Law into Their Own Hands

Tammy Sneath Grimes of East Freedom, Pennsylvania was arrested for stealing an elderly dog from its legal owners. She illegally trespassed on their property and took Jake, a 19 year old German Shepherd/Black Labrador mix. She has refused to tell police where she hid the dog and refuses to return the dog to its rightful owners. Steve and Lori Arnold, Jake’s owners, are worried about Jake and grieved that someone would steal him. Moving an elderly dog like that would cause it great pain, but it isn’t considered cruelty when the animal rights crowd does it.

“I just want my dog back,” Steve Arnold said with his voice cracking and tears welling in his eyes. “He’s part of my family, and the judge just let her (Tammy Grimes) go. I didn’t get my dog back. I want justice to prevail.”

Under Pennsylvania law the local humane society has the same authority as a police officer to start criminal proceedings to enforce the law against animal abuse. Chief Reilly and the humane society claim there was no evidence of abuse. Grimes was hand-cuffed, formally charged and taken to jail.

Officer Flaig arrived at Grimes’ house with three other police vehicles. Tammy was hand-cuffed, formally charged and taken to jail. She claims that Chief Reilly called her an idiot and that he told Officer Flaig that if she ever came near his dog, he would put a slug in her a**. Way to go, Chief Reilly! He deserves an award for doing what every law enforcement officer in this country should be doing which is to put an end to every form of animal rights animal terrorism.

Best Friends Animal Society (more about them in a future article) organized a rally to support Dogs Deserve Better founder, Tammy Grimes. The “Free Tammy Rally” was held at the Courthouse located at 423 Allegheny Street #1 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. The rally preceded the preliminary hearing at 1:00 p.m. at a different courthouse located at 800 East Main in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania. Animal rights supporters from across the country bombarded the city with phone calls, faxes and e-mails in support of this common dognapper.

Grimes was released on $50,000 unsecured bail following her arraignment before Magisterial District Judge Paula Aigner. She was charged with theft and receiving stolen property. She pled not guilty and has asked for a trial by jury. She shows no remorse for her actions and claimed she’d do it again. Grimes should be held accountable and punished for her crimes.

Grimes has been known to act out in similar publicity stunts in the past. She doesn’t have a large budget like some of the other AR rescues and shelters, but after this nationwide exposure, she is sure to rake in some AR dollar$. As usual, an AR witness or rescuer is not a credible source of information. They always claim that the animal is suffering, has no food or water . . . Their spiel is predictable, but the general public falls for it every time. (Remember Chicken Little? Or the little boy who cried wolf too many times?) After 20 years of reading the same thing over and over, the AR crowd has lost all credibility as far as I’m concerned.

But now for some good news. Another member of Grimes' DDB posse has also been charged trying to “free” a chained dog she knew nothing about. I am certainly not against animal welfare, but let common sense prevail. Either speak with the owners to find out why the dog is chained, or make a formal complaint to animal control and let them assess the situation. Kathleen Slagle, authored an anti-chaining bill that is still pending in the Pennsylvania Assembly. Slagle sent anti-chaining literature to a couple who own a beagle, and was eventually charged with harassment. Her hearing is set on October 23, 2006 in Clearfield County, PA.

P.S. Keep a watchful eye out for the spate of animal evacuation laws sweeping the country. They sound good on paper, but will be eventually used to stop all tethering, chaining, crating, caging and other methods commonly used to control and safely keep dogs, cats and other animals. (The dog is still simmering, but I am steamed.)

In response to the Grimes travesty, the Best Friends Animal Society in Utah (more about them on another day) has proposed a Citizen’s Good Samaritan Law. Their Animal Law Coalition department wrote a law that would enable people to enter the property of another for the purpose of providing emergency care for an animal.

Here is the text of the law:

"Any person who has a reasonable belief an animal is injured, in pain, sick or otherwise in need of assistance to protect its health or life shall have the authority to enter upon the property of another for the limited purpose of taking the animal to a veterinarian or otherwise providing emergency care to the animal, provided that, reasonable efforts have been made to report the animal’s condition to the local humane officer and the animal’s owner or custodian. A person offering assistance to an animal under this section shall be immune from civil or criminal liability."

Best Friends is expected to push the initiative throughout the country and you can expect us to push back.

    You’ve Got to be Kidding!?!

This is no joke and I am not Laughing

Would you believe that Dogs Deserve Better won first prize in the second annual ASPCA Pet Protector Contest held in 2003? They did and they also received $7,500 cash. The award was created to honor Animal Welfare organizations and shelters across the country that excelled in anti-cruelty and anti-neglect programs.

This particular contest was sponsored by the Home Equity division of Chase Home Finance, the home finance business holding of J.P. Morgan Chase. & Co. The contest focused on progressive and innovative techniques that animal welfare organizations are using to protect our nation¹s pets against animal cruelty and neglect. Well, if Tammy Grimes’ actions are a sample of this, God help us all.

That Was Then, This is Now

Tammy Grimes of Dogs Deserve Better has just been nominated as one of the top ten finalists for the Animal Planet “Hero of the Year” award. I don’t know why I should be surprised that the AR movement would create a role model for future AR wannabes from a trespasser, thief and liar.

Disrespect people’s property and privacy – here’s an award and some cash for your efforts. Take an old dog from its worried owners – here’s another award. And if she wins this one, she’ll also receive $10,000.

    Scales of Justice

    The Pierce County, Washington Controversy

Several years ago, the Avian Welfare Coalition, an animal rights group began a campaign to discredit several large aviaries in the northwestern part of the nation. They stirred up public opinion by liberally using the term “birdie mills.” Emotions ran high while their E-mail lists were buzzing with rumors, slander and libel. Doctored photos regarding these commercial aviaries were posted. Plans were made to shut down the aviaries and take the birds for themselves.

One of the aviaries received a visit by two members of the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) of Lynnwood. Then the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County (HSTPC) was contacted and they made a surprise inspection of the aviary. The aviary passed inspection. The ARs don’t give up that easily though. One of them called in an anonymous “tip” that the aviary had a meth lab on the property. IT DID NOT. The police and humane society showed up to seize drugs and confiscate birds. However, the psittacines were well cared for and no drugs were found.

The main instigators who targeted this aviary were looking forward to reaping the spoils of the raid, i.e. parrots. The bird rescue involved with this case has less than a sterling reputation in that area of the country. While spouting the AR anti-breeding rhetoric, they have been caught with breeding nest box setups themselves. It is ironic that these AR types accuse others of what they really want to do themselves – which is to make money from using animals. Whether it is money for adoption fees or money from public donations, they profit without the hard work that goes into a legitimate business venture.

Death of an Animal Enterprise: Circling for the Kill

In the meantime, the AR’s first target continued to be under constant harassment. She finally moved her birds and business to another location. By this time the “rescuers” enlisted the help of a bad actor who had made a career out of winning lawsuits. In fact, the aviculturists in California had run him out of their state. He is a tenacious and intelligent enemy with far too much time on his hands.

Larry Gallawa escalated the war began by the rescues and AWC. He focused his attention, time and resources on the Scudder Aviary because he thought that was where Cripple Creek had taken their birds. A long battle between Gallawa and Scudder’s Parrot Depot, formerly M & J Enterprises, began. Martha Scudder eventually sued Gallawa for defamation and loss of character.

Gallawa compiled folders full of questionable “evidence.” Photos were entered into evidence which were doctored, misleading and not even of Mrs. Scudder’s aviary! Vet reports and lab tests were also tampered with as evidenced by misspelled words that an avian vet would not make. She would lose the case only because she was unable to prove economic damage. Her son and his wife also owned a separate aviary on the property and he had kept one set of books for both businesses.

The Scudder's aviary parrot production dropped drastically due to the number of intrusive inspections triggered by Gallawa, et al’s dis-information campaign. She welcomed the inspections, but her breeding operations suffered. She went from raising about eighty chicks a year to only four or five.

The internet was humming with animal rights biased news about this case. People from all over the world spoke out against the Scudder aviary – people who did not know this woman and who had never been to her breeding facility. Isn’t that just like an animal rights activist? They never let the truth get in the way of ruining the life of an animal owner.

No one bothered to check out the facts. No one bothered to visit the aviaries and make an honest and unbiased report of what they saw. The bird breeders were automatically judged guilty and have since worked hard to prove their innocence.

    Media Feeding Frenzy

A freelance writer by the name of Mira Tweti began to write about the Pierce County controversy. Larry Gallawa was able to gavage feed Tweti buckets full of his unwholesome slop. She regurgitated it verbatim and the general public, hungry for scandal, ate it up without question.

Tweti had no problem getting her articles published in the local News Tribune, and the AR crowd posted them across the world, via the Internet. Aviculturists, on the other hand, were unable to receive the same courtesy. As far as I am aware, space for even on opinion piece in the same newspaper was never granted, although several people submitted our side of the issue. Anyone in the know realizes that Washington and Oregon are hotbeds of animal rights activism.

Tweti entitled one of her articles, Parrots in Peril. The only thing we or our birds and parrots are in peril of are over zealous people who would love to “rescue” our birds and keep them for their own. We have to stop these bird rustlers who hide beneath so-called “angel” feathers. Who is Mira Tweti? Why does the News Tribune serve as her sounding board but refuses to publish our articles and commentaries? What are Tweti’s credentials? Does she own an aviary? No. Is she a bird expert? No. However, that doesn’t stop Tweti from announcing that she is writing a book about aviculture, and you can be sure it is a self serving effort.

The AR press is alive and well. Reporters are spoon fed press releases that save them time and effort while helping the publisher to sell more papers. Few reporters bother to investigate the other side of the story, let alone print it.

    Enter the Usual Suspects

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) does not own or operate any shelters. They simply take in donations from the gullible public that fall for their propaganda. “Help us save abused animals”, “help us end cruelty to animals” are two of their most effective mantras. The HSUS has developed a network of humane societies and shelters across the nation. Each state chapter has board members from several of your state’s rescues, shelters, sanctuaries or humane societies. The member organizations are provided with HSUS literature and training as well as how to lobby for increasingly restrictive legislation.

As a result, many cities contract with HSUS federated humane to perform licensing, sheltering and animal control duties. The Humane Society of Tacoma & Pierce County is a member of the HSUS Federation of state humane societies. In fact the HSTPC and the Washington branch of HSUS State Federated humane societies share some officers and board members. While the state chapter office has a relatively small budget, the HSTPC maintains multi- million dollar net assets.

The president of the Washington chapter of the HSUS federation is also the executive director for the HSTPC. He makes a yearly salary in the upper five figures and it may well be over $100,000 by now. In 2004 they spent $34,090 on supplies, $29,331 on telephone bills, $34,766 for postage and shipping, $55,593 for printing and publications, $53,184 for equipment and maintenance, $31, 657 for conferences conventions and meetings and made $97,934 off of investment interests.

During 2002 – 2004, the Humane Society of Tacoma & Pierce County brought in $802,366,500 from spay/neuter programs, animal adoptions, public education materials and classes and Animal Control and Licensing. There was a scandal involving the accounting of some of these monies and the HSTPC lost their contract with Pierce County.

Never Underestimate the Power of AR Pressure

Legislative representation is based on taxation; therefore, the needs of commercial enterprises and professional aviculturists should take precedence over non-profit organizations. However, the non- profits have spun Lady Liberty around so that she now faces backwards. Our founding fathers are surely rolling in their graves.

When local animal control officers declare an aviary, a kennel, a cattery or any other animal enterprise as substandard, then the AR crowd is in a position to take those animals from their rightful owners and profit from them. Make no mistake, they do profit from them through adoption fees which are often more than an honest breeder makes from a sale. To add insult to injury, they demonize the victims whose animals they stole.

The non-profits get the animals for free. They manipulate the facts to make them look like the good guys, especially where animal breeders are concerned. Animals that do not fetch a good adoption fee, or take too much time, effort and resources or animals that do not have some kind of monetary value are euthanized.

Administrators of non-profit rescues, sanctuaries and shelters have been known to use their tax free monies to purchase land and houses for themselves, pay for their personal expenses. Some have even spent money, meant for the care and upkeep of animals, for vacations so they will not get “burned out” from the hard, day-to-day work necessary to maintain an aviary or kennel.

Rescues and shelters sometimes take in so many animals and birds, they cannot properly care for them. Often these warehoused (hoarded?) birds and animals are farmed out to other rescues and shelters. These shelters are not immune to disease outbreaks either. (Rescue mills?) Have you ever seen birds on TV, pacing back and forth in their cages, moving their heads from side to side? The narrator tells us these birds have “gone crazy.” The general audience will incorrectly infer that this condition is caused by breeders and pet owners. What the narrator fails to mention is that these birds that are locked away in sanctuaries and rescue shelters. They are not allowed to be with a companion bird or a mate for fear they will breed. They are not adopted out or placed in a commercial breeding situation. (animal cruelty?)

    Reality 101

Commercial breeder must work diligently to make an honest dollar from their business or hobby. Any profits they make are taxed and reinvested into their establishment. This includes rent or mortgage payments, utilities, food and medication, environmental enrichment, time and devotion. Tweti, and those who read her drivel, should spend a few days tending to the day-to-day routine maintenance of an aviary or breeding facility. They would have an entirely new perspective about what they so easily criticize.

The people who own birds in Pierce County must constantly ensure that their homes and aviaries are guarded and protected at all times, especially when they must temporarily leave to take care of business. They have been threatened with anonymous phone calls and are fearful their aviaries and homes may be burned to the ground along with their precious animals inside. Does this indicate concern for the birds and animals the extremists profess to care about? Many aviculturists have been told that if they support a restrictive bird ordinance, the authorities will be lenient on their behalf. Doesn’t the mafia use such tactics?

The “rescuers” have even gone so far to line up at one commercial aviary – cages and carriers in hand -- hoping to carry away that person’s private property for free. The entire controversy has raged on simply because one man chose to create a problem where none existed. Why?

Gallawa has never owned or operated an aviary. He takes care of his daughter’s two pet birds and I am told these birds barely tolerate his presence. He is certainly no bird expert. He has told people that he takes them everywhere with him, even to pick up his dry cleaning. A conscientious parrot owner would never take their bird to a place filled with noxious fumes. He acts as if he is a bird expert but is not. He will do anything to ruin the reputations of aviculturists, including reporting serious diseases where none exist. Why hasn’t he been brought to justice?

What’s in it for this man? Attention? Tax free, unaccountable donations? You betcha’. Gallawa claims his only concern is for the welfare of the birds in the Scudder aviary. (One of the original targets of his vitriol has passed away and the other has moved.) These Scudder’s birds were well cared for many years before he started his unfounded vendetta. He has managed to stir up public opinion in support of his lies while he encourages a herd of mindless sheep to hound and harass innocent citizens.

Gallawa is capable of anything and will do whatever he can to obtain free birds for his cronies. What do aviculturists have to do to be heard? Where is justice? She has been toppled and is lying broken and scattered in the dust.

When they came for the cockfighters, You remained silent. You were not a cockfighter

When they came for the dog breeders, You remained silent You were not a dog breeder.

When they came for the cat breeders, You remained silent You were not a cat breeder.

When they came for the aviculturists You remained silent; You were not an aviculturist.

When they came for your animals, There was no one left to speak out.
